Airlines are already preparing for what appears to be the end of mobility limitations due to the pandemic that broke out at the end of 2019; for this, they are implementing various strategies that awaken the market’s attention to regain their confidence and interest in traveling; as part of the strategies to recover the market, SWISS, the main airline in Switzerland; which is part of the Lufthansa group, today announced its new “Premium Economy” class.

What is “Premium Economy”?

It is a new category of cabin seats. This new class will be between the economic / tourist category and the Business or premium category. In the same way, the price per ticket will be between the aforementioned categories; this new class intends to open a space that presents intermediate costs and services to the market, make it more comfortable for the user to access without sacrificing their budget, and consequently with some service limitations regarding the higher-cost class.

The benefits of “Premium Economy” at SWISS

Among the benefits of this new class is the increase in space, to achieve this the number of seats per row has been reduced, which allows for more spacious aisles and at the same time more space for each passenger, the seats are also reclining, and even at maximum recline they do not invade the space of the rear passenger, the seats are also wider than those of the economy class by up to 5 cm, the space with the seat in front has increased from 78.9 cm in the economy class to 99 cm; maximizing comfort for the traveler’s legs.

In addition to the increase in comfort by expanding the space dedicated to each traveler, the services will also have an improvement, as part of the benefits of this new class, passengers will receive a courtesy kit, in addition to their own high-quality headphones that will allow them to enjoy a Unique audiovisual experience on a screen for each passenger of 15.6 inches, each seat will offer the possibility of charging devices through the USB connector integrated to each seat.

SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx commented on this, “We are delighted that, with the introduction of our new Premium Economy class, we are meeting the growing demand from our customers for more privacy, more comfort, and more individuality.” The airline has also commented that this new class is expected to be a success.

The arrival date for the new SWISS class

The Swiss airline announced that tickets for Premium Economy class are already on sale on flights from April 2022; however, as new cabin seats are installed and ready for use, they will offer tickets at an extra cost over economy class tickets, as a kind of “introductory phase” before departure date official in April of the following year.
