Despite the current aviation situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a recent study has shown that the labor demand for airline pilots in the commercial sector will increase in the coming year and the trend will gradually rise for several more years. This is excellent news amidst the great uncertainty currently experienced in the commercial aviation labor area due to border closures, airport closures, flight and destination bans, quarantines, etc.
A professional study of the aviation labor market
The Canadian company CAE (“Canadian Aviation Electronics”), which develops flight simulation technologies and provides training and consulting services to airlines, published its report “Prospects for Pilot Demand from 2020 to 2029″ at the end of this year.
CAE is considered a serious and expert company in the aviation industry worldwide, as part of its advisory services to airlines provides key information on market behavior and analysis and projection of the market in the future, so the report issued is being taken with due seriousness by all industries in the field.
The results of the study
As a first step, the CAE study points out the significant decrease in demand for pilots during 2020 as a consequence of the pandemic; however, the Canadian company’s projection estimates that by 2022 the population of active pilots will recover to the levels reached during 2019. The study shows that the main reason for the upcoming increase in demand for commercial pilots is due to retirements and the expansion of airline fleets. These two variables, among others, will lead to a demand for 27,000 new pilots for the private air transport sector in the short term (by the end of 2021).
As for the long-term forecast, for the decade 2020-2029, the report reveals encouraging data since it is predicted that during those 10 years civil aviation will require approximately 268,000 new pilots, of which 45,000 will be located in the executive or charter aviation sector. The increase in aeronautical operations will not only favor pilots but will also increase the demand for airport managers, flight attendants, maintenance personnel, airport staff, etc.
CAE’s words on the relevance of their study
Nick Leontidis, president of CAE Group, commented on the company’s study: “With CAE 2020-2029’s Pilot Demand Outlook, we hope to equip the industry with the knowledge that will help the global aviation community understand, rethink and learn how to continue to build and grow the supply of highly skilled pilots as an emerging industry in the recession.”
