In order to carry out the different aeronautical operations, a variety of responsibilities have been delegated to various positions and occupations, from the pilots who operate an airplane, to the personnel who ensure the cleaning and maintenance of an airport; They are necessary jobs, essential for the air transport service to satisfy its users. However, some positions in the operation may not be visible and in the same way very important for the service to be carried out efficiently. In this article, we will talk about one of those positions whose managers can seldom be seen in action, but whose decisions affect the effectiveness of the aeronautical service at all times, we are talking about the airport manager.

Its roles and responsibilities

In short, the airport manager assumes decision-making responsibilities for the operation of a company directly related to commercial aviation services (airlines, airports, aircraft maintenance companies and airports), his decisions are usually aimed at managing the Resources that it has available, both human and material, and must manage them based on the efficiency with which they will contribute to the satisfaction of the user of air transport. It is necessary to say that an airport manager can occupy different positions in the organizational hierarchy of a company dedicated to the aviation industry, so the degree of responsibility varies depending on how many areas are directly affected by their decisions.

Decision-making of an airport manager

The airport manager is therefore responsible for logistics in the aeronautical operations for which it is responsible, and may be exclusively an airport operator and the services for which it is responsible; such as baggage and parcel services, or on the other hand, it may be responsible for the logistics of the users’ experience on the plane (boarding, services and food offered in flight, etc.). Among the decisions that an airport manager must make in the event of a contingency such as Covid-19, is deciding whether to cut aircraft fleets based on the cost/benefit that this represents.

As management theory has shown; it is necessary for any organization to function properly as a leader capable of detecting the areas that represent opportunities for improvement and the threats that can affect the performance of a company. Specifically, in the area of aviation, the airport manager has the necessary knowledge to fully understand the context and situations of the company that operates, being able to delegate to other workers, with the necessary instructions, the resolution of contingencies, or in some cases itself solve the unforeseen events of the company’s operations.
