The Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term that transcends technology and refers to millions of digitally connected objects, i.e., it is a network that interconnects physical objects using the Internet. The objects that are considered within the IoT make use of specialized hardware that allows them to be connected to the network, and also give the option of programming specific tasks according to people’s needs.
The Internet of Things is basically responsible for enhancing those objects that previously were connected through a closed circuit, such as communicators, cameras, sensors, among others, now, through the use of the Internet they can communicate globally by using the network of networks.
How does the Internet of Things work?
The IoT consists of objects such as smartphones, voice assistants, vacuum cleaners, speakers, among others, containing chips and circuits that allow them to have the necessary tools to perform specific tasks; these objects work with sensors to receive indications programmed by people.
It is considered that the key to “remote operation” is currently given through the Internet of Things, each of the objects connected to the network has a specific IP address through which it can be accessed to receive instructions, in addition, it may be able to contact an external server and send the data it collects.
Benefits of IoT
There are several benefits that the IoT can provide to people, first of all, it could be considered energy-saving, because these network-connected devices can have systems that know how to manage more efficiently the electricity consumption, as is the case of air conditioning inside the house where it is possible the programming and zoning according to the busiest hours during the day, in addition, some of these objects can also provide electrical management through the rationalization of electrical loads, for this it is necessary to make the disconnection of equipment of non-priority use according to electricity consumption.
On the other hand, the IoT provides people with comfort, this aspect covers all the work that can be done in order to improve comfort in people’s daily routine. These jobs can be turned on or off the lights of a place, regulating the lighting according to the level of ambient light, being able to integrate the door system to the phone or TV, among others.
IoT risks
Mainly, what worries people about the IoT is the security of the data collected and privacy of the same because most devices that are connected to a network do not give the option to install security software, i.e. it is impossible to install an antivirus like the computer, so these objects can be very vulnerable to attacks. Now, although many connected devices cannot be protected, the router has the ability to provide protection at the point of entry and provide some level of security to these objects.
Future of the IoT
It is estimated that the use of the Internet of Things will continue to grow, that by the year 2025 there will be about 21 billion IoT devices; during the next few years there will be more IoT products on the market, so more people will be involved in the style of having a smart home where items can connect to Wi-Fi and make the decision to buy the missing product at home.
On the other hand, cities and companies will also increasingly make use of smart technologies to save time and money, so it is estimated that cities will be able to automate, remotely manage and collect data through visitor booths, surveillance systems, bike rental stations or cabs.
