On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 departed from La Guardia Airport in New York to Charlotte International Airport, North Carolina. However, less than 5 minutes after taking off, he suffered an accident, which changed the expected journey. Fortunately, he ended in a contingency without significant mishaps. The event was announced through different media; and even the famous film director and producer Clint Eastwood decided to record a feature film that would expose the event to the whole world, and the expertise of the captain of the aircraft; Chesley Sullenberger, along with the questions that came after the event.

The reception of the film
On the one hand, we have the opinion of specialized critics; which, although they have not judged this project by director Clint Eastwood as a “bad movie,” various ideas have found it as a film that has much to improve, mainly because of what some consider “excessive recycling” of the movie scene, splashdown. In terms of blogs and the public, portals such as Rotten Tomatoes have rated the film with over 80% positive acceptance.
A successful duo
The direction of Clint Eastwood, accompanied by the performance of Tom Hanks in the role of Captain Chesley Sullenberger “Sully” projects the history of the event dramatically, justly attributing the heroic credit to Captain Sullenberger; still, the director intends to enter the pilot’s mind and make the viewer feel in the skin of this character, to convey the burden and responsibility that he had over himself in the most crucial moments of the event and in the questions of it.
Beyond the accident
The film narrates beyond the aeronautical contingency and exposes all the situations after it. After the splashdown and rescue of passengers and crew, questions came from the airline, insurers, and other bureaucracies involved. The previous ones doubt about the decisions made by the captain, thinking that he could have landed in a nearby airport instead of a river, that is where Tom Hanks must reflect the doubts experienced by “Sully” and his internal battle, as well as against his accusers.
The accident that caused the splashdown
The unforeseen event that led the Airbus A 320 of US Airways flight 1549 to land in an emergency was due to an impact against a flock of Canadian geese, known as a “Birdstrike,” that damaged both engines; if you want to know more about “Birdstrikes” we recommend you read: Why are birds dangerous for commercial airplanes? On the other hand, despite these isolated situations, air transport remains a safe and reliable transport, as we saw in What is the safest transport in the world?
What do you think of this topic? Do you think the film manages to reflect the intensity of the emotions experienced by Captain Sullenberger?
