2020 statistics
While it is true that aviation decreased the number of flights last year due to the pandemic, which caused the decrease in accidents, even so, the IATA (International Air Transport Association) has confirmed that aviation continues to be the safest means of transport, such affirmation has been made manifest in the last annual safety report of the association.
According to the IATA report, there were 38 accidents worldwide in 2020, of which only 5 were fatal, causing the death of 132 people. These figures reflect that there are 1.71 accidents per million flights, for example, according to the statistics, for a person to suffer an accident, they would have to travel daily by plane for 461 years before suffering a risk air contingency.
2020 a year of successful aviation safety
Of the total aviation accidents during 2020, none were attributed to a loss of flight control, this achievement had not been achieved for 15 years, and yet, this achievement will not be repeated in the present 2021 due to the Sriwijaya Air accident, in Indonesia, at the beginning of 2021. Another achievement in 2020 was that there was no commercial airliner accident in Latin America.
Situations that contribute most to air accidents
According to IATA studies, the situations that most cause accidents in commercial aviation are meteorology, aircraft malfunction, crosswinds, airport infrastructure, crew errors, electrical storms, and poor visibility. Of the accident situations, the most common is runway excursion, which consists of a deviation or displacement outside the area or surface of the runway during the take-off or landing phase, caused by: pilot error, runway contamination, adverse weather conditions, and mechanical failures.
