Aeronautics is one area of technology and engineering that is in constant development. Among the motivations for the constant improvement of systems and physical elements is the safety of both passengers and aircraft crews; along with the aspects to consider for the safety of the operation of an aircraft are the meteorological conditions. In the following article, we will learn about a new wind shear warning system implemented in one of the most important airports in Latin America.

The relevance of El Dorado
The full name is “El Dorado Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento International Airport” and it is the major airport in Colombia; it is in the city of Bogotá, in terms of cargo volume it is the most important airport in Latin America, and in terms of passenger volume it ranks third in the region after the Mexico City International Airport and the International Airport from São Paulo-Guarulhos; they have awarded twice it as the best airport in Latin America. By observing the relevance of El Dorado, we can understand the need it has to constantly improve its logistics and systems (technological innovation).
An alliance for technological improvement
El Dorado International Airport recently announced the decision to partner with DTN, a company dedicated to data analysis, the aim of the alliance is for DTN to support El Dorado airport operations by analyzing and interpreting data from the Windshear system, which gets information to track winds through LiDAR technology (measurement by laser), the system will be coupled to the existing meteorological technology at the airport, so it is expected that El Dorado will have one of the most advanced meteorological solutions in the world to detect winds that pose a threat to the safety of passengers and aircraft in time.
The warning system and wind shear
Windshear uses laser measurement technology (Lidar) to detect variations in outdoor wind currents, they send the data to a meteorological suite (software) where the DTN Company analyzes and interprets it to provide operational intelligence which leads to confident decision making.
On the other hand, wind shear is a sudden change in the direction or speed of wind currents, this is one of the greatest dangers that an aircraft faces; especially during takeoff and landing, where maneuvering through space becomes complex; this wind phenomenon can occur in a matter of seconds; however, it can be warned by correctly analyzing the developing meteorological circumstances.
