Despite the current aeronautical situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a recent study has shown that the labor demand for air pilots in the commercial sector will increase in the next year and the trend will gradually increase for several more years. This is excellent news in the midst of the great uncertainty that currently exists in the commercial aviation workplace due to border closures, airport closures, flight and destination bans, quarantines, etc.

A Professional Study of the Aviation Labor Market
The Canadian company CAE (“Canadian Electronics for Aviation”), dedicated to the development of technologies for flight simulation and also a provider of training and advisory services for airlines, has published at the end of this year its report entitled “Pilot demand outlook between 2020 and 2029”. If you want to know about a flight simulation project from another company similar to CAE, we recommend reading: FAA approved flight training device for the Pilatus PC-12 NGX.
CAE is considered a serious and expert company in the aeronautical field worldwide, as part of its advisory services to airlines it provides key information on market behavior, analysis and future market projection, so the report issued is being taken with due seriousness by all industries in the field.
The results of the study
In the first place, the CAE study points out the significant decrease in the demand for pilots during 2020 as a consequence of the pandemic, however, the projection of the Canadian company estimates that by 2022 the population of active pilots will recover at levels reached during 2019.
The study shows that the main motivator for the next increase in the demand for commercial pilots is due to retirements and the expansion of airline fleets, these two variables among others, will cause in the short term (at the end of the year 2021) a boost in demand for 27,000 new pilots for the private air transport sector.
Regarding the long-term forecast, for the decade 2020-2029 the report reveals encouraging data, since it is predicted that in the course of those 10 years civil aviation will require approximately 260,000 new pilots, of which 45,000 will be located in the sector of executive or charter aviation. The increase in aeronautical operations will not only favor pilots, but will also increase the demand for airport managers, hostesses, maintenance personnel, airport personnel, etc.
CAE’s words about the relevance of his study
Nick Leontidis, President of the CAE Group, commented on the company’s study: “With the CAE 2020-2029 Pilot Demand Outlook, we hope to equip the industry with the insights that will help the global aviation community understand, rethinking and learning how to continue building and growing the supply of highly skilled pilots as an emerging industry from the recession. “
