Technological innovation is a constant in the aeronautical industry; we have seen advances both in the physical and mechanical aspects of airplanes, but also in the technical and system aspects of airports, without which commercial aviation would not be possible. As a general rule, airports have a control tower from where navigation help and pilots support, take-off and landing management, etc. are managed. Today we will learn about Norway’s proposal, which will opt for a remote and centralized control tower, outside the airports.

Inauguration of the new Remote Control Tower Center

On October 20, Avinor, the Norwegian State airport and air navigation operator, officially opened the new Remote Control Tower Center in the city of Bodø, near the Arctic Circle. This center will be the point from where the air traffic of several airports will be managed, so the control towers of these will no longer participate in this activity.

A joint effort in favor of technological development

The Norwegian authorities will not have absolute control over the new Remote Control Tower Center, the private company Kongsberg will also participate. The Norwegian Minister of Transport and Communications, Knut Arild Hareide, has expressed about this partnership from the Avinor website that: “(The Norwegian authorities and the Kongsberg company) have used complementary areas of expertise to build a system that will strengthen the aviation sector. Digitization is an important part of Norway’s future and we are pleased that the aviation sector is leading the way in this regard.”

For the Norwegian authorities, the development of technologies implies the future of their society, and today they see aviation as one of the pioneering sectors of such progress, both in the physical part of airplanes and in airport management systems. Knowing the Remote Center of Control Towers

It is a remote installation to airports in which it participates in its management. To be able to carry out their activities at airports remotely, cameras, microphones, and various sensors must be installed in the airfield and at strategic points. All information is transmitted in real time through fiber optics, in the same way as interaction with the aircraft crew, so physical presence at the airport is no longer a necessity.

The base has numerous and large screens that provide various views of the airports, their information, administrative boards and other utilities for aeronautical management. The goal is to achieve greater aviation efficiency through digitization and the use of new technologies. These types of technologies are part of the infrastructure and systems developments that give rise to smart cities, as mentioned in the Participation of Angel Lovera, CEO of BCDA Aeronautical Solutions in the webinar: Smart Cities 2020.

What do you think of this topic? Do you think that in the near future it will be possible to standardize the use of remote control towers for the management of aeronautical operations around the world?
