It has been heard a lot lately that global aviation is suffering significantly, due to the expansion of the coronavirus and the free transit measures that have been implemented by the different governments to try to contain the pandemic that is currently worrying the world and that are causing great damage in everyone’s health.

Airlines with a long career and knowledge around the world are suspending flight routes that they regularly take, they are limiting their labor operation to preserve and achieve to keep themselves operating effectively during this time, and in fact some have requested assistance from governments to balance your losses.

The Regional Vice President in the Americas for the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Peter Cerdá reported in a recent interview to CNN that what is currently being experienced is an unprecedented situation, that he had never seen a crisis of this magnitude and that they are in constant communication with the main representatives of the airlines to evaluate their cases.

There are many airlines that are seeing themselves in a very critical situation, it is estimated that in the coming weeks there may be some that will stop their operations permanently, the vice president of IATA indicates that it is a very sensitive business, which is being affected by changes in fuel costs and restrictive measures that do not allow them to operate regularly, they therefore request government intervention.

Impact of restrictions

As we have commented, the restrictions that they are enacting have had a great impact on the airlines, for example American Airlines and Latam have been reducing by approximately 50% their international operations that they currently have, on the other hand, in Latin America almost 300 flights are handled per hour and this is being minimized by 60% -70%.

As a result of this, sustain operations with this massive reduction for such a long time, is already causing airline reserve funds to wear out very quickly, which is why their continuity in the labor field is at risk and they are trying to finding solutions.

Responses to the request for support to governments

Due to the critical situation, they have requested help from the United States because they handle a large number of international flights daily and there are restrictions that are very significant, however, at the moment they continue to operate under the same premise; In Latin America, the Colombian government has already announced a support measure in the industry because they are aware of the importance of air transport; the rest are evaluating the possibility of support but have indicated that it is necessary to continue reducing their operations due to security measures.

IATA is constantly evaluating any measure that may be useful for the airport industry, especially since, as we have been able to mention in the article, Several commercial airlines make modifications from passenger planes to cargo aircraft the airlines are providing other services to move medical supplies and help those affected by the pandemic; therefore, they believe that it would be beneficial to reduce fuel costs or airport charges.
